German Village Art League (GVAL) is pleased to announce its 3rd annual “The Language of Art” juried exhibition, where visual art is paired with poetry. Hosted by The High Road Gallery , “The Language of Art” will take place June 1 through 25, 2011. The gallery is located at 12 E. Stafford Rd., Worthington.

"The Language of Art" features visual art complemented by ekphrasis poetry – the graphic, often dramatic description of a visual work of art in poem. Selected artwork will be assigned to a poet, who will produce a poem that reflects their experience with the art.

GVAL challenges visual artists to submit work that will inspire the poets’ pens. For centuries, visual art has influenced the way we see the world as has poetry. "The Language of Art" brings them together through an exploration of inspiration and nuance with sometimes unexpected and unintended results.

2011 Jurors in Visual Art: Carol Hershey, owner of The High Road Gallery, and Jami Goldstein, a longtime arts advocate and enthusiast, who supports artists’ work through hers at Greater Columbus Arts Council. 2011 Juror in Poetry: Scott Woods

camillia

Camillia by E. Jane Williams
In memory of E. Jane Williams

Below is a poem written about Camillia -now showing at High Road Gallery.

The Question of After
by Elizabeth Christy

How is marriage like a green tulip?

Marriage is like the holy arches of your eyebrows.

When my blue eyes drown you in the morning,
does your beard grow long enough to trip you?

A river rushes from your lips
washing me from this covered table to a lost sea.

Will you bunch my flowered frock
into a boutonniere for your lapel after I leave you?

I will wind the flaming strand of your hair
around my fourth finger and wear it
until hair burns through flesh to bone.

If I kiss the apple, will the walls turn red?

After I plow our papered walls,
I will plant the delicate dance.

Can a nest of hair swaddle a wedding gown?

I pluck the tulips’ petals, pink and green,
and press them to the canvas of your breast.

When my palm cups my cheek,
can you hear the song it sings me?

Only children can hear the cupped Psalms sung silent.

Does the taste of a Bosc pear
sear your tongue with disappointment?

I place my history on your tongue like the skin of a pear.

FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE

Poets have used art as inspiration for centuries. John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn” is one famous example, but even ancient poets such as Homer have turned to artwork as a source of stimulation for their writing. Honor Moorman notes: "William Blake said that poetry and art are 'ways to converse with paradise' (Farrell 6). In the Phaedrus, Plato observes that when paintings and poems are put together, they 'seem to talk to you as if they were intelligent' (qtd. in Foster and Prevallet xv)... Georgia Heard calls language 'the poet’s paint' (65), and many other writers and artists have commented on the parallels between these two modes of expression." (46-47) In Heart to Heart: New Poems Inspired by Twentieth-Century American Art, Jan Greenberg explains her belief in “the power of art to inspire language” (4). She notes that “What the poet sees in art and puts into words can transform an image . . . extending what is often an immediate response into something more lasting and reflective.”

Ekphrasis or ecphrasis is the graphic, often dramatic description of a visual work of art. In ancient times it referred to a description of any thing, person, or experience. The word comes from the Greek ek and phrasis, 'out' and 'speak' respectively, verb ekphrazein, to proclaim or call an inanimate object by name.
